I don’t have kids but I do have siblings that I am helping through college. In the Philippines, kids have April and May off and then go back to school in June. Since they haven’t started their spring break yet, I still have a lot of time to look for going back to school gift ideas. In the meantime, I will be looking for gifts that I can give to the two kids that will be finishing at the top of their class. I am thinking about giving them dresses and shoes for their graduation.

Regency Beauty Institute was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota many years ago. It is the fastest growing beauty school in the United States. It has expanded from two Minnesota schools in 2002 to 80 campuses across 19 states and is still growing. My cousin’s daughter recently graduated from a cosmetology school. She has not done any work on me yet but I can tell that she is good at hairstyling and in combining make up colors. I saw pictures of her work when she was doing make overs on mannequins and she really did an exceptional job. If you are thinking about pursuing cosmetology education, check out the Regency Beauty Institute.

I never thought too much about the idea of becoming a teacher. When I went to college, I thought I wanted to be an engineer and consequently ended up with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. That was while I was still in the Philippines. Unfortunately, there were not many engineering jobs available there and I was never really able to make use of my college education. Since coming here to the US, I have been thinking about taking some courses in nursing and becoming either a nurse’s aid or licensed practical nurse.
Recently, I heard about the Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship which encourages people with a background or education in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) to go back to school to earn a master’s degree in education so that they can become qualified middle or high school teachers. It sounds like an interesting idea since degrees from foreign universities are accepted.
The teaching fellowship offers $30,000 in stipends to people in the STEM field who either have or are near completing a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field and are willing to commit to working three years in a designated low income urban or rural area. That sounds like it might be a really good deal for a student or someone who is unemployed to get into a field where there is a real need in this tough job market.
